Roadmap in Project Management – Definition and Meaning
A roadmap is a strategic, usually visual representation at a high level of abstraction that outlines the planned development of a product, service, technology, or project over a defined future period. It serves to communicate the vision and strategic direction by showing the main goals, outcomes (e.g., releases, features), and milestones over time, thereby illustrating the intended path toward achieving strategic objectives.

In the development of a new software product, for example, the roadmap might show the planned major releases for the next 12–18 months along with the key new features or functional areas to be included in each release. A best practice is to review and update the roadmap regularly (e.g., quarterly) to reflect changes in market conditions or strategic priorities and to share it transparently with all relevant stakeholders. While it supports strategic time planning (cf. PMBOK Guide) and especially release planning in agile environments, a roadmap has a more strategic focus than a detailed project schedule and mainly promotes alignment and communication of the product or project vision.
